Crystal Palace: how a vanished Victorian edifice still asserts its presence over south London.
I grew up within two miles of the Crystal Palace - or rather, within two miles of the Crystal Palace site, as it had lain empty since its spectacular conflagration in 1936. Part of suburban folk memory, the Palace is still very much there in spirit - not just a bus destination or name of a football team. Here I make a sentimental trip back and poke around among the weeds to what remains of this extraordinary relic.
